Elle Starlight’s Artistic Vision: Frida Kahlo Amidst Blue Butterflies
Have you seen Frida Kahlo in the Hollywood Riviera? Surrounded by blue butterflies, the acclaimed Mexican artist stares out amidst a brightly colored sun on a mural at the corner of Camino de Encanto and Vista del Sol. Created by artist Elle Starlight, Frida in Flowers stands 15 feet wide and 7 feet tall and was painted on the south side of her house.
“Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist and the one most inspirational to my work,” said Elle, who has lived in the Riviera for 10 years.
“Her art was often filled with nature and that part of our yard has an abundance of flowers, so I felt called to paint her there.”
Originally from New Jersey, Elle majored in studio art at NYU and received her master’s in Art Education from the same university. Elle’s artistic talents led her to a career in graphic design and art direction at ad agencies and corporations, such as Skechers in Manhattan Beach.
Living near the beach, Elle’s love for color has influenced her use of sunset hues and geometric patterns, like the abstract painting on her home’s garage door. In addition to creating outdoor murals at homes, schools and corporations, Elle paints whimsical scenes in nurseries and playrooms. A current client hired Elle to paint a larger-than-life fairy garden with pinks, golds and greens that will enhance her child’s play experience.
Other clients hire Elle to paint surfboards and skateboards, turning a piece of sports equipment that’s ready to be retired into a vibrant piece of art.
“I love making my client’s visions come to life, whether it’s on a wall, a surfboard or a traditional canvas,” said Elle.
“It’s in the act of creating that the mundane becomes extraordinary. A work of art can touch lives, inspire and connect people.”
